Sydney is the capital and largest city of New South Wales, Australia’s most populous city. The metropolis is situated on the country’s east coast and encircles Sydney Harbour. It stretches approximately 80 km (50 mi) from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west, and approximately 80 km (50 mi) from the Hawkesbury River and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in the north and north-west to the Royal National Park and Macarthur in the south and south-west. Greater Sydney is made up of 658 suburbs distributed across 33 local government areas. The people who live there are referred to as “Sydneysiders.” As of June 2023, the estimated population of the city was 5,450,496
