Queensland, the second-largest and third-most populous state in Australia, is located in the northeast. To the west, southwest, and south of it, respectively, are the Northern Territory, South Australia, and New South Wales. Queensland’s borders are as follows: the Pacific and Coral Seas border it to the east; the Torres Strait, which divides Queensland from Papua New Guinea, to the north; and the Gulf of Carpentaria to the northwest. Queensland is the sixth biggest subnational entity in the world, covering an area of 1,723,030 square kilometers (665,270 sq mi), greater than all but 16 countries. Queensland is a large state with a variety of climates and geographical features, including as rivers, coral reefs, mountain ranges, and tropical rainforests.
