The capital and largest city of the historical area of Carinthia, which includes Slovene Carinthia, is Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria. After Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck, it ranks as the sixth-largest city in Austria with 104.862 residents as of January 1, 2024. The University of Klagenfurt, the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences, and the Gustav Mahler Private University for Music are all located in the city, which also serves as the bishop’s seat for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt. One of Austria’s indigenous populations, the Carinthian Slovenes (Slovene: koroški Slovenci; German: Kärntner Slowenen) regard Klagenfurt to be their cultural center.
