Even with its enormous expanse, Canada has one of the lowest populations in the world. According to author Anna Brownell Jameson, who was born in Dublin, this reality and the majesty of the surroundings have been essential to the feeling of Canadian national identity. Jameson examined “The seemingly endless line of trees before you; the boundless wilderness around you; the mysterious depths amid the multitudinous foliage, where foot of man hath never penetrated…the solitude in which we proceeded mile after mile, no human being, no human dwelling within sight,” the author wrote with delight while visiting central Ontario in 1837. Despite their small population, Canadians have created what many view as a model multicultural society by inviting immigrant populations from every other continent. Furthermore, Canada is home to and exports an abundance of intellectual capital and natural resources that few other nations can match.
