Manitoba is a Canadian province whose capital and largest city is Winnipeg. Its center is located close to North America’s longitudinal center, at the meeting point of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. With 749,607 residents in the city and 834,678 in the metropolitan region as of 2021, Winnipeg is the sixth-largest city and eighth-largest metropolitan area in Canada.
The city is called after the neighboring Lake Winnipeg; the words “muddy water” in Western Cree are the source of the name.
