Germany’s capital and largest city in terms of both area and population is Berlin. With more than 3.85 million residents, it holds the title of most populated city in the European Union when population within city limits is considered. This distinction was earned following the United Kingdom’s, and consequently, London’s, exit from the European Union. In addition, the city is the third-smallest state in terms of land area in Germany and is a state itself. The state of Brandenburg encircles Berlin, and Potsdam, the state capital, is not far from Berlin. With a population of more than 4.5 million, the Berlin metropolitan region holds the title of most populous urban area in Germany. With 6.2 million residents, the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region is the second-largest metropolitan area in Germany.
