With about 223,000 residents, Mainz is the largest and capital city of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, ranking 35th in terms of population in all of Germany. Situated in the second-largest metropolitan region in Germany after Rhine-Ruhr, it is called the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. This region includes the cities of Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, and Hanau.
