Germany’s Saarland state is located in the southwest of the nation. Aside from the city-states of Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg, it is the smallest German state in terms of area and population, with 990,509 residents as of 2018. Its area is 2,570 km³ (990 sq mi). The main and capital city of the state is Saarbrücken; other cities are Saarlouis and Neunkirchen. Saarland’s borders are primarily formed by the departments of Moselle (Grand Est) in France to the west and south, and Rhineland-Palatinate in neighboring Germany to the north and east. To the northwest, Saarland shares a narrow strip of land measuring about 8 kilometers (5 miles) with the canton of Remich in Luxembourg.
