The capital of the German state of Hesse, Wiesbaden (lit. “meadow baths”), is the second-biggest Hessian city, after Frankfurt am Main. It is the twenty-eighth largest city in Germany, home to about 283,000 people. With the nearby city of Mainz, Wiesbaden constitutes a conurbation with a population of approximately 500,000. The surrounding cities of Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, and Hanau are included in the larger metropolitan region of Rhine-Main, which is embedded in the conurbation. The combined population of this metropolitan region is more than 5.8 million, making it Germany’s second-largest metropolitan region after Rhine-Ruhr.
