There is a Monpa population in Tawang. A monarchy called Lhomon or Monyul governed the region between 500 BC and 600 AD.[5] Later, Tibet and Bhutan, two nearby countries, came to rule the Monyul kingdom.
According to the intentions of Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, the 5th Dalai Lama, the Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso constructed Tawang Monastery in 1681. The name Tawang Monastery, which means “Chosen by Horse,” has an intriguing mythology associated with it. Tawang is where Tsangyang Gyatso, the sixth Dalai Lama, was born.
