Northeastern India’s West Kameng district is part of Arunachal Pradesh. It makes up 8.86% of the state’s total area. The Kameng river, a Brahmaputra tributary that passes through the district, is the source of the district’s name.
Past Events
The Kameng River basin has historically been ruled by the Ahom kingdom, Bhutan, Tibet, and the Mon monarchy. When the Kachen Lama built the Lhagyala Gompa in Morshing in the seventh century, Tibetan Buddhism began to gain traction among the tribal peoples.
