The district headquarters is located in the town of Barpeta, which is in the Assamese state of India. Situated 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest of Guwahati, the city is a prominent hub in Western Assam. Because of the numerous Vaishnavite Satras that are nearby, it is also known as Satra Nagari, or the Assamese temple town.

Geographical
At 26.32°N 91.0°E, it is situated at an average elevation of 35 meters (114 feet). The distance to Manas National Park is 40 kilometers. The town is traversed by three rivers: Chaulkhowa, Mora Nodi (Dead River), and Nakhanda, which are tributaries of Brahmaputra.
