Historically referred to as Champa Nagri, Bhagalpur is a city in the Indian state of Bihar that is located on the Ganges river’s southern bank. In terms of population, it is the third-largest city in Bihar and is home to the Eastern Range, the Bhagalpur division, and the district headquarters. Known as the Silk City, it is also on the Indian government’s list of cities to be developed as part of the Smart Cities Mission. After the capital city of Patna, it is the only district in Bihar to house the three major universities: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, TMBU, Agriculture University (BAU), and IIIT Bhagalpur. Additionally, construction is currently underway to build Vikramshila Central University adjacent to the ruins of the medieval Vikramshila Mahavihara. The city’s railway station is Bhagalpur.
