In the Indian state of Bihar, the city of Chhapra (ISO: Chaparā) serves as the headquarters of the Saran District. It is located close to where the Ganges and Ghaghara rivers converge.
The establishment of saltpeter refineries in the 18th century by the Dutch, French, Portuguese, and English led to the growth of Chhapra as a river-based market. In 1864, it received municipal recognition.[Reference required] Chhapra Junction is the main railway station. Ambika Bhavani is the name of a well-known Shaktipeeth temple located in Chhapra.
