Kishanganj town serves as the district’s administrative center. Kishanganj district is one of Bihar state, India’s thirty-eight districts. Purnia division includes Kishanganj district (Seemanchal).

The district of Kishanganj, formerly a part of Purnia district, is located in the Mithila area. Following the arrival of Indo-Aryan peoples, Mithila rose to prominence as the home of the Videhas, an Indo-Aryan tribe that governed the Mithila Kingdom (also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas).
