Throughout the 19th century, birthday cakes have been a component of birthday festivities throughout Europe.
A common custom among Germany’s wealthy in the fifteenth century was to top birthday cakes with candles. The custom of cutting a round cake and “making a wish,” which we now identify with birthday celebrations, originated in Ancient Greece. Originally created as sacrifices to Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and hunting, these birthday cakes were older than those of today. The people’s wishes were intended to be carried into the temple by them. The cakes’ round form represented the moon’s actual shape. The cakes appear to have been garnished with burning candles to give them a glowing appearance.
Later, this was modified and took on other shapes, serving as the foundation for the custom of birthday cakes that we follow to this day. There have also been tidbits about birthday cakes and other celebrations that date back to ancient Rome.
Using chocolate or sugar, well wishes are frequently written on the cake. Birthday cakes were once considered a symbol of riches, but in the 20th century, they became widely available to the majority of people. Numerous varieties of birthday cakes, which resemble candy and other mixed sweets, are used all over the world. The individual whose birthday it is should make a wish before the cake is consumed and blow out the candles all at once to ensure that their wish is fulfilled.
