The customary cake given at wedding receptions after supper is called a wedding cake. The wedding cake is served at a “wedding breakfast” in some parts of England; this does not imply that the meal will take place in the morning, but rather that it will happen later in the day after the ceremony. In contemporary Western society, the cake is typically offered to guests at the reception and is on display. Wedding cakes were traditionally baked with good luck in mind for both the newlyweds and all of their guests. These days, though, they act as more of a focal point for the wedding and aren’t always provided to the guests. Rarely are cakes constructed with just one tier that can be eaten by the bride and groom.
