One of the four districts that make up the Indian union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli on the country’s west coast is Daman district. The state of Gujarat’s Valsad district borders it on the north, east, and south, while the Arabian Sea encircles it on the west. As of the 2011 Census, the district’s population was 191,173—a rise of 69.256% from the 2001 Census—with an area of 72 square kilometers (28 sq mi). Daman is the district headquarters. When it was jointly administered, the former territory headquarters were located at Panjim.
