The Hindu goddess Durga is the subject of the annual Durga Puja celebration, sometimes called Durgotsava or Sharodotsav. It originated in the Indian subcontinent and is observed in remembrance of Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. It is especially observed by Hindus in Bangladesh and in the Eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Odisha.] In the Indian calendar, the festival is celebrated during the month of Ashvin, which falls between September and October under the Gregorian calendar.The final five days of the ten-day Durga Puja celebration are the most important.Both private and public spaces are used for the puja; the latter has a makeshift stage and structural embellishments called pandals. In December 2021, Durga Puja in Kolkata was added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
