Recognize Guru Nanak Dev Ji or Guru Nanak Jayanti. Sikhs commemorate the birth of Guru Nanak, their first guru, on Gurupurab. “The day of Guru” is what Gurupurab literally means. The guru, who is the founder of Sikhism, was born on Puranmashi of Kartik month in 1469, according to the Hindu calendar.

This year, November 30 falls on that date, marking Guru Nanak’s 551st birthday. The Talwindi region is where he was born. Currently known as Nankanan Sahib, his birthplace is in Pakistan.

On this auspicious day, Sikhs unveil Prabhat Pheris. These are early-morning processions in which participants assemble at the gurdwara before singing hymns as they travel across the neighborhood.
