Popular nationwide is the celebration of Raksha Bandhan. People from various backgrounds, regardless of caste or creed, take part in this festival. The occasion is marked by Upa-karma, which is the altering of the sacred thread for the brahmins, known as Avani Avittom in South India, on the full moon day of the lunar month Shravana (also known as Shravana Poornima).

In various places, the event is observed differently and is also known as Rakhi Poornima, Nariyal Poornima, and Kajari Poornima.
How should Raksha Bandhan be observed?
On this holiday, sisters typically tie a sacred thread known as Rakhi around their brothers’ wrists, apply tilak to their foreheads, perform arati, and pray for their long and healthy lives. The name “Raksha Bandhan,” which translates to “a bond of protection,” refers to this thread, which stands for love and lofty emotions. In exchange, the brother promises to take care of his sister and gives her a gift. Prior to tying a Rakhi on their brother’s hand, the sisters first tie a Rakhi on a Tulasi plant and a second Rakhi on a peepal tree, requesting Vriksha Raksha Bandhan, or the protection of nature.
