The capital of the Indian state of Goa and the administrative center of North Goa district is Panaji (/ˈpʌnədʒi/; Goan Konkani: Ponnjem, IPA: [pɵʳdʒĩ]); it is often referred to as Panjim. It served as the territorial capital of Portuguese India in the past. It is located in the Tiswadi sub-district (taluka) on the shores of the Mandovi River Estuary. Panaji, which is larger than Margao and Marmagao, is the largest urban agglomeration in Goa, with 114,759 people living in the metropolitan region.
