Gujarat’s Panchmahal district contains the municipality of Godhra (Gujarati: ગોધરા Godhrā). It is the Panchmahal district’s administrative center. The name was originally derived from the words gou, which means “cow,” and dhara, which, depending on how it is spoken, can indicate either of two things: either ‘dharaa’ refers to a feminine object or person that “holds” something, generally meaning “land,” or ‘dhaaraa’, which means “flow.” The second pronunciation, though, is not common nor typically connected to this word.[Reference required] As a result, “Godhra or Godharaa” refers to the Cow Land.
