Originally called Kaira district, it was split in two in 1997, with the southern portion becoming Anand district. There were four talukas (sub-districts) in the Kaira region that made up Charotar: Nadiad, Anand, Borsad, and Petlad. Upon district division, Nadiad Taluka was assigned to Kheda district while the remaining three districts were assigned to Anand district. Kheda now has eleven talukas. In 2013, the Kheda district’s Balasinor and Virpur were transferred to the newly established Mahisagar district.
