Gujarat, India’s Valsad district is home to the city and Municipal Corporation of Vapi (pronounced [vāpī] in IAST. It is surrounded by the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and is located close to the banks of the Daman Ganga River, some 28 km south of the district headquarters in the city of Valsad. The old, little stepwell that was located close to the Balitha neighborhood is thought to be the source of the city’s name. In Sanskrit, vapi (वापी) means a water reservoir or a body that stores water.
