North-central India’s state is called Haryana. The states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand border it on the north and northeast, the state of Uttar Pradesh and the union territory of Delhi border it on the east, and the state of Rajasthan borders it on the south and southwest. The state of Punjab and the union territory of Chandigarh bounded it on the northwest. Not only is Chandigarh the capital of the Chandigarh union territory, but it also functions as the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana.

The division of the erstwhile state of Punjab into the Hindi-speaking Haryana and the Punjabi-speaking Punjab resulted in the creation of Haryana on November 1, 1966. Despite the fact that the reorganization complied with Sikh community needs for a Punjabi suba (a province speaking Punjabi), it also largely fulfilled the hopes of the Hindi-speaking Punjab region for a Vishal Haryana (Greater Haryana).
