Perched atop the Shivalik Range, the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir commands a commanding view of the northern plains. The city of Jammu, which is often referred to as the “city of temples” and serves as the state’s winter capital, is the source of the district’s name. Raja Jamboo Lochan, who flourished in the fourteenth century B.C., is credited with founding the city. The Raja had gone hunting one day when he chance to see a goat and a tiger drinking from the same pond. He was moved by this remarkable occurrence and made the decision to establish a city here where the powerful and the weak might coexist peacefully and with tolerance for one another. He eventually established the city.
