In the disputed Kashmir area, Poonch, sometimes known as Punch, is a district in the Jammu division of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Its headquarters are located in the town of Poonch, and it is surrounded on three sides (north, west, and south) by the Line of Control, which marks the border between Kashmir, which is controlled by Pakistan and India. The former district was split in two during the Indian-Pakistani war of 1947–48. Jammu & Kashmir, an Indian state at the time, eventually included one that went to Pakistan and the other
