Meaning and Origin
The town of Hazaribagh, where the district is based, is the source of its name. The precise translation of Hazaribagh is “a city of one thousand gardens,” as it is situated along the “new military road” that was built from Kolkata to Varanasi in 1782 and the years that followed. The name Hazaribagh is derived from two Persian words: hazar, which means “one thousand,” and bagh, which means “garden.”
