Pakur serves as the administrative hub of Pakur district, one of the twenty-four districts that make up the Indian state of Jharkhand. On January 28, 1994, the Pakur sub-division of Sahibganj district was divided to form Pakur District. 900,422 people lived in the district as of the 2011 census, which is spread across 686.21 km². The district is located in the northeastern region of the state of Jharkhand.
