In the Indian state of Karnataka, the city and taluk headquarters of Hiriyuru are situated in the Chitradurga district.

Built on the Vedavathi River, Hiriyur is famous for possessing the oldest dam in Karnataka, called Mari Kanive. Hiriyur is located beside National Route 48. Bangalore is 160 miles to the northwest of Hiriyur. Hiriyur is a stop on all buses from Bangalore that head to Hubli, Belgaum, Davanagere, and Ballari.

There is typically little rain and a dry climate. In winter (November to February), the temperature at night can drop as low as 18°C.
