A town and taluk in the Belagavi district of the Indian state of Karnataka, Kittur was formerly known as Kittoor. It was formerly a part of Bailhongal Taluka, but on October 23, 2012, during Kittur Utsav’s opening, the Karnataka Chief Minister proclaimed it an independent taluka. It is Karnataka State’s 177th Taluk. Because of Kittur Chennamma’s (1778–1829) violent insurrection against the British East India Company, in which British Commissioner St. John Thackeray was slain, Kittur is a historically significant place.
It was a hamlet with the location code 598110 under Sampagaon C D Block during the 2011 Census of India.
