In the Indian state of Karnataka, the town of Maski and its archeological site are located in the Raichur district. Situated beside the Maski River, a tributary of the Tungabhadra, is where it is located. The term Maski comes from Mahasangha or Masangi. The location gained notoriety in 1915 when C. Beadon discovered a little rock decree from Emperor Ashoka. It was the first of Emperor Ashoka’s edicts to refer to him by his given name, Ashoka, as opposed to his previous title, Devanampiye piyadasi. This edict was important to conclude that many edicts found earlier in the Indian sub-continent in the name of Devanampiye piyadasi, all belonged to Emperor Ashoka.
