Located on India’s Malabar Coast, Kerala (English: /ˈkɛrələ/ ⓘ/ KERR-ə-lə) is also known as Keralam in Malayalam (Malayalam: [keːɾɞɭɐm] ⓘ).[15] After the States Reorganisation Act was passed, it was created on November 1st, 1956, by merging the Malayalam-speaking parts of the former Cochin, Malabar, South Canara, and Travancore areas.[16][17] Kerala, which covers an area of 38,863 km³ (15,005 sq mi), is the twenty-first largest state in India. Tamil Nadu borders it to the east and south, Karnataka to the north and northeast, and the Lakshadweep Sea[18] to the west. Kerala, with 33 million people living there as of the 2011 census, is the thirteenth most populous state in India. Thiruvananthapuram serves as the capital and is split into 14 districts. The most commonly spoken language is Malayalam.
Malabar

In the world of international trade, Kerala was often referred to as Malabar. In addition to the present-day state of Kerala, the term Malabar was previously used to refer to the adjacent regions of Tulu Nadu and Kanyakumari on the southwest coast of India.38[39] Malabars were the name given to the people of Malabar. Together with Kerala, the term Malabar was used as a collective noun to refer to Kerala prior to the entrance of the East India Company.[16] Arab mariners referred to Kerala as Male even as early as the sixth century CE, during the reign of Cosmas Indicopleustes. However, the initial part of the name appears in Cosmas Indicopleustes’ Topography previously.
