The Kargil district is located in the disputed Kashmir region of Ladakh, which is administered by India.It is one of the two districts that make up the Ladakh union territory, which is governed by India. In the city of Kargil is the district office. The district is bordered to the west by the Indianly controlled union territory of Jammu and Kashmir; to the north by the administrative territory of Gilgit-Baltistan, managed by Pakistan; to the east by the Leh district of Ladakh; and to the south by the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The district, which is northeast of the Great Himalayas and includes most of the Zanskar Range, comprises three historical regions known as Purig, Dras, and Zanskar. The river valleys of the Dras, Suru, Wakha Rong, and Zanskar are home to its people.
