Origin of the name
The district is named for its headquarters town, Mandsaur. It is thought to have evolved from Marhsaur, which was formed when two villages, Marh and Saur or Dasaur, united to form the town. In ancient times, the settlement was known as Dashpur. Other etymology states it comes from Mandodari, Ravana’s wife, who is claimed to have been born in the district.
