Imphal is the capital of Manipur, a state in northeast India. It is located in the center section of the state in the Manipur River valley, at an elevation of 2,500 feet (760 metres).
Prior to British occupation, Imphal was the seat of Manipur’s monarchs. In 1944, it was the location of a key tactical victory for Anglo-Indian forces over Japanese forces on the Burmese front during World War II. The city is a significant commercial center known for its weaving, brassware, bronzeware, and other cottage industries. Imphal College, Imphal Training Centre, Dhana Manjari College, and a technical school are all there. Imphal is connected to the North-Eastern Railway in Dimapur, Assam, and to Myanmar (Burma) via hard-surface roads. Mainly Manipuri. Pop. (2001)
