Bhubaneshwar is the capital of Odisha (Orissa), an eastern Indian state. It is located in the eastern section of the state on the Kuakhai River, a tributary of the Mahanandi River delta.

The neighboring Dhauligiri rock edict of Mauryan emperor Ashoka, which commemorates his legendary victory of the Kalingas, depicts Bhubaneshwar’s history dating back to the third century BCE. Between the 5th and 10th century CE, it served as the provincial capital for various Hindu kings as well as a center of Shiva worship. Its numerous temples (including the Mukteshwara and Parashurameshwar), which showcase every phase of Orissan architecture, were constructed between the 7th and 14th centuries. The city includes the old quarter,
