Puducherry’s past

Puducherry’s history extends back thousands of years. There is proof that the Romans traveled there in the first century AD for trade. The Pallava kingdom ruled briefly at the start of the fourth century AD, and was succeeded by a number of southern dynasties, including the Cholas, Pandyas, Vijaynagara, and the Sultanate of Maudrai. This little fishing village was developed into a magnificent port town in 1674 by the French governor Francois Marin.
