One of the three districts that make up the Azamgarh division in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is Azamgarh district.
Meaning and Origin
The town of Azamgarh, where the district is based, serves as its namesake. In 1665, Azam, a descendant of Vikramajit, established the town. A convert to Islam, Vikramajit was a pargana of Nizamabad and a descendant of Gautam of Mehnagar. Azam and Azmat were the names of his two kids. It is also referred to as the “land of the sage Durvasa,” whose ashram was situated in the Phulpur subdistrict, 6 kilometers (4 mi) north of the Phulpur subdistrict headquarters, close to the junction of the Tons and Majhuee rivers.
