The district headquarters is located in Banda, which is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a component of Division Chitrakoot.

Situated in the historic Bundelkhand region, Banda is well-known for its jewelry-making-grade Shajar stone as well as the historically and architecturally significant sites Kalinjar and Khajuraho. Khajuraho is renowned for its intricately carved temples and is a World Heritage Site. The magnificent rock sculptures and the battle history of the castle of Kalinjar are well known.
