The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh contains the city of Meerut (pronounced Mēraṭha), which is located in the Meerut district of Western Uttar Pradesh. Within the National Capital Region, the city is located 80 km (50 km) northeast of New Delhi, the capital of the country, and 480 km (300 mi) west of Lucknow, the capital of the state.

In terms of population, Meerut is the 26th most populated city in India and the 33rd most populous urban agglomeration as of 2011.The city has one of Asia’s major gold marketplaces, the largest producer of musical instruments in India, and one of the greatest producers of sporting products. The city is referred to as the “Sports City of India” and serves as a hub for education in western Uttar Pradesh.
