The Indian state of Uttarakhand contains the city and municipal corporation of Roorkee, which is located in the Haridwar district. The district headquarters, located in Haridwar city, approximately 31 kilometers (19 km) away. It was a part of Panwar Gurjar’s Landhaura Princely State until 1824, when the British conquered it after victorious over the first liberation fighter, Vijay Singh Gujjar. It is dispersed over a level area beneath the Himalayan Sivalik Hills. The main feature of the city, the Ganges Canal, which runs through the center of it from north to south, is the banks upon which it was created.
