Kalimpong is a town and the administrative center of an eponymous district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is situated at an average elevation of 1,250 meters (4,101 feet). The town serves as the Kalimpong district’s headquarters.[5] The territory is administered by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, an autonomous organization under the state of West Bengal. The Indian Army’s 27 Mountain Division is stationed on the outskirts of the city.[6]

Kalimpong is noted for its educational institutions, many of which were founded during the British colonial period.[7] Prior to China’s takeover of Tibet and the Sino-Indian War, it served as a trading hub between Tibet and India.
