Jakarta, formally the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta), was originally known as Batavia until 1949. It is Indonesia’s capital and largest metropolis. It is situated on the northwest coast of Java, the world’s most populous island. Jakarta is Southeast Asia’s largest metropolis, with over 11.3 million people living in the city proper and over 32.5 million in the metropolitan area. It also serves as ASEAN’s diplomatic headquarters. The Special Capital Region has the status of a province and is surrounded by two additional provinces: West Java to the south and east, and (since 2000)
