One of Mexico’s thirty-two federal organizations is the State of Mexico (Spanish). Known by its common moniker, Edomex (derived from Estado de México), to differentiate it from the name of the entire nation, it is the most densely populated and most populous state in Mexico.

The state, which is split up into 125 municipalities, is situated in south-central Mexico. Toluca de Lerdo (“Toluca”) is the state capital, and Ecatepec de Morelos (“Ecatepec”) is the largest city. Mexico City is encircled by the State of Mexico on three sides, with the states of Michoacán to the west, Morelos and Guerrero to the south, Tlaxcala and Puebla to the east, and Querétaro and Hidalgo to the north.
