The Canterbury Association of powerful Englishmen connected to the Church of England founded Canterbury in December 1850. (At first, an attempt was made to limit residents of the province to church members, but this was abandoned.)[1] The first two of the First Four Ships, the Charlotte Jane and the Randolph, arrived in the region on December 16, 1850, which is now observed as the province’s anniversary.
