One of New Zealand’s provinces was called Hawke’s Bay. Following a conference in Napier in February 1858, the province broke away from the Wellington Province and continued to exist until the provincial government was abolished in 1876. There were just 1,185 European residents in the provincial area when it was founded in 1858.
Past Events
William Colenso was one of the first Europeans to settle in the region; he established his mission station at harbor Ahuriri, which is the harbor of Napier.[1] The division of Hawke’s Bay from the Wellington Province was decided upon at a meeting held in Napier in February 1858, and it became effective in November of the same year.
