New Plymouth Province was the least populated and the smallest of the original six provinces, covering an area of around 2,000,000 acres (8,100 km2). The province’s capital, New Plymouth, saw the arrival of European settlers in 1841. The European settlement did not spread far beyond New Plymouth over the first thirty years.
