Moscow Oblast, also referred to as Podmoskovye or Подмосковье, is a federal subject of Russia. 8,524,665 people (2021 Census) live in an area of 44,300 square kilometers (17,100 sq mi)[12], making it the second most populous federal subject and one of the nation’s most densely populated districts. The oblast lacks an established administrative center; instead, the Moscow Oblast Duma and the local government, as well as many other places throughout the oblast, house the public authorities.
